In Memoriam of:

Zeev Hakar

Age: 72

From: Be'eri

In Loving Memory of the Innocent Souls Taken Too Soon. United in peace, their light shines on in the hearts left behind. October 7, 2023, a day of sorrow, but their memories guide us toward a hopeful tomorrow.

Zeev Hakar, z"l, was murdered in Kibbutz Be'eri along with his wife, Zahava.

He was born in Gan Yashia, the first son born in the settlement. He was a child that every parent wishes for, filled his parents with pride and was also loved by his teachers.

When he was a kid, a terrorist from Gaza infiltrated their area and tried to kill him, but Zeev's dog, Othello, protected him with his own body.

Zeev studied at Mikve Israel Agricultural High School and this period shaped him personally and professionally and made him a man of the land. He had a hobby of building radios, and he would go to Tel Aviv and buy components and assemble transistors from scratch. In addition, he played chess at a high level and won second place in the school championship.

Zeev was a tank commander in his military service. He had already boarded the bus on the way to the liberation holiday when the Yom Kippur War broke out. Zeev fought in Sinai and his tank was damaged twice, and twice during the war he changed tanks.

On the evening of Simchat Torah, Ze'ev and his wife, Zahava, spent time with their sons Hagai and Dvir and their families and parted as usual with a hug and a kiss. In the morning, the kibbutz woke up to the sound of gunshots. As soon as it became clear that Be'eri had been infiltrated by terrorists, Zahava asked the family group that everyone give signs of life. At one point Zahava wrote that there were terrorists outside their house, and at 1:50 PM the terrorists entered the house. Ze'ev and Zahava were locked in the shelter. The families of Dvir and Hagi were rescued throughout the night, but the connection with Ze'ev and Zahava was lost. It turned out that the terrorists took them as hostages to another house in the neighborhood, where there was a shootout with the IDF. Their fate was not known for 11 days, until the family received the message that they were murdered by the terrorists.
