In Loving Memory of the Innocent Souls Taken Too Soon. United in peace, their light shines on in the hearts left behind. October 7, 2023, a day of sorrow, but their memories guide us toward a hopeful tomorrow.
Major Aryeh Ziering, 27, an Israeli-American canine unit officer, was killed during the first day of the Israel-Hamas war after his unit was called up to the south.
A native of Ra’anana with three siblings, Ziering’s parents had immigrated to Israel from New York and the family maintained strong ties with their roots back in America. Ziering returned to the US each summer for much of his life.
Ziering’s death was widely reported in the US media, including USA Today, CBS News, a various local New England newspapers.
“This question of can and when, will there ever be peace… We believe in peace. We believe in coexistence,” his parents told CBS News. “We don’t want to eliminate anyone from this planet. Everybody should have a place to live.”
They said it was something their son also believed in.
In a post on Facebook, some members of his unit wrote that they had been effective in taking over villages and in freeing hiding civilians. “Unfortunately we lost our attack team commander in the battle. His name was Aryeh, which means ‘lion’ in Hebrew. They say he fought like a lion before he was killed.”
Aryeh Ziering was buried in his hometown of Ra’anana on October 10, 2023.
